Miss Joshua - Boyfriend Music Review

For those of you familiar with the Louisville, Kentucky music scene back in the early 90’s when LRS102 was the best station in the world, Phoenix Hill Tavern was still around and the Carl Casper Auto Show was all the rage you might recall a band called Miss Joshua. Lynny Slaughter (singer) and Allen Slaughter (composer, multi-instrumentalist) slammed some jams that were a perfect fit for that time, being both modern and classic, easily belonging in the ranks of Heart, Winger, and I dare say even Van Halen.

Disbanding for personal reasons didn’t stop each of them from pursuing music, whether as a hobby or as a continuing presence. Linda went on to not only pursue music as a bass player and vocalist but also publish books such as The Ghostkiller Saga under her pen name, Lynny Prince (now Lynny Slaughter.) Being part of huge bands in Louisville in the last 10 years including Dirty Dollz and the Tyrants and Sanctify had kept her magic alive and further polished. Fortunately, for all of us, she decided to reignite good ol’ Miss Joshua (named after her two children Missy and Josh) and the world is better for it.

Miss Joshua’s latest single, Boyfriend, is re-released in its classic format for fans of old and new alike. What starts with a foot stomping beat and seriously catchy guitar is instantly loaded with vocal firepower from Lynny’s in-your-face might.

The lyrics are fun as they tell a story about a guy in the crowd at a show having a thing for the singer, and how it unfolds is clever. What’s most clever is Lynny’s annunciation of the words. Notes that hang, shift and sometimes come around with a powerful syllable to bite them off at just the right time adds an extra element to the song.

Whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do?” is a timeless melody line from the chorus that will live rent-free in your head. And when you think it couldn’t get any better, Allen comes in with a lead guitar that made me think of Van Halen in an artistic way as opposed to in a blistering scales sort of way. This extra magical touch demanded me to put it on repeat, kick back and nod with admiration.

To sum it up, Boyfriend is a catchy, timeless song that’s every bit as powerful today as back then. With powerful, demanding vocals, melodic hooks with both the rhythm guitar and vocals, sweet guitar solo, fun lyrics and an excellent picture of a crowded bar this heavy hitting, hard rocking tune definitely gets the job done. I can easily and happily score Miss Joshua’s Boyfriend a 12 out of 12 on the Chromatic Scale.
