Marissa Yeh Music Review

ree

Oh, Louisville, KY, how I wish you did more for your city's musical artists. Sigh. During my recovery I would occasionally frown due to not being in touch with new music like I was when I started The Audio Punch. During those periods I'd jump on the chance to listen to anyone, spending hours just checking out multiple genres to get a taste of that fresh audible imagery. That's when I came across Marissa Yeh's unique style. In a sea of Hard Rock, Country, Metal, Pop, R&B and decent Hip Hop I was slapped with...Video Game Rock? Not necessarily but Marissa's introduction to her desire to one day create music for video games hit me in the sweet spot. It was a first, for a music dreamer, that I came across. So, what did I find?

For over 14 years, Marissa has been creating music to help with her autism, which she's open about and it works! The combination of layered samples sway, ebb and flow that grabs your attention and pulls you along. With hundreds of songs, I listened to nearly 40 of them and check out new ones each time they come up. Ranging from a little over a minute to rarely hitting 3 minutes, these bit sized pieces always have something going for them. If the entire song isn't quite as catchy as some of her other songs, there's always something that gets and keeps my attention. In every case, my mind creates imagery of a scene and I feel a mood, or vibe, if you will. Moods cover a chilled back black light session, a little eroticism, trippy dives and definitely various video game styles from pixelated RPG's, fantasy and especially gothic settings with a good number of them reminding me of the Metroidvania games.

It's hard to pick a true favorite but if there was one I can think of to entice you to check out more, it'd be Mellow Zygote. This one isn't video game-like but it has such a unique vibey swag that it made me wonder what her scope was capable of.

All in all, with catchy bits and pieces, in bite sized lengths, with passion and drive, music as therapy is definitely the right choice with Marissa Yeh. Check out a multitude of catchy vibes on her Youtube https://www.youtube.com/@MarissaYehhh and Soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/marissayeh! Be sure to follow her too because she churns out songs weekly. I'm definitely a fan and supporter for life!
